Pearl Harbor ceremony set in Hubbard

Pearl Harbor ceremony set in Hubbard

HUBBARD

The Hubbard Township Police Department and Hubbard VFW Post 3767 will use an American flag that was flying in Hubbard on Dec. 7, 1941, as part of their Pearl Harbor Day memorial ceremony at 1 p.m. Wednesday in front of the police department at 2600 Elmwood Drive Extension.

The flag was flown at the home of Steve and Julia Tickey, 351 Erie St., on Dec. 7, 1941. After that day, the family rolled up the 48-star flag, now more than 70 years old, and kept it in storage never to fly again until Wednesday.

Gary Lynn, grandson of the Tickeys and a police-department employee, received the flag from his late grandmother, Julia. He decided to use it in the ceremony as a reminder of the military personnel and civilians who were killed and wounded in the attack.

The ceremony will include a 21-gun salute and a presentation about the 48-star flag by Tony Kavalesky of VFW 3767.

Howland school board to seek additional levy

HOWLAND

The Howland school board has voted to place a 4.9-mill additional levy before voters at the March 6 primary election.

It is the same levy voters rejected Nov. 8 by a vote of 5,106 to 3,640.

“We advised the community that if the November levy attempted failed, that more than likely they would see the levy on the ballot again, and that is what we have done,” said Barb Wright, a board member.

“Our school system needs to have additional revenue because we can’t cut our way to fiscal solvency,” she said in a press release Monday.

Gunbattle in Warren; no injuries reported

WARREN

No one was injured during a gunbattle involving an AK-47-type assault rifle at the intersection of Third Street Southwest and Hayes Avenue Southwest.

Police were advised that three to four males were firing guns in the roadway about 2:30 p.m. Sunday. When officers arrived, they found bullet holes in homes and vehicles and 45 spent shell casings from an AK-47-type weapon in two locations.

A single bullet struck the second-floor exterior wall of the home at 796 Third Street SW, as well as the hood of a car parked in front, police said.

A home at 810 Third Street SW was hit with six gunshots, and a vehicle parked there was hit in the tire.

A home at 1200 Hayes was hit by a bullet on the first floor near the front door, and a 1998 Mercedes in the driveway was hit once as well.

The house had a bullet hole that penetrated the exterior wall and lodged in a child’s bedroom wall.

Two men shot at Warren intersection

Warren

City police are investigating the shooting of two Warren men Monday evening.

Police say, Ralph Duffy, 59, was sitting in his car at the corner of Tod Avenue NW and Parkman Road NW when a bullet came through his driver’s door and grazed his left side, leaving a red welt. Police do not believe Duffy was a target, they said.

Lamar Salter, who is in his early 20s, was shot through the shoulder as he was sitting in his vehicle at the same light.

Salter was able to drive himself to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital, where Duffy also was examined. A report on their conditions was not available.

Police are looking for a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu, dark in color, which they believe is involved in the shootings.
