Sale of throws is Kiwanis project

YOUNGSTOWN

At its weekly meeting Friday at the YMCA downtown, the Kiwanis Club of Youngstown unveiled a new commemorative throw honoring Mahoning County’s past and vision for the future.

Designed by Kiwanis members and made in the USA, each throw is 50-by-68 inches and available in forest green/cream, colonial blue/cream or cranberry/cream.

The throws depict eight county scenes, including Lanterman’s Mill, the courthouse and the Covelli Center. The club is selling them for $50 each, and proceeds will benefit the Kiwanis International “Eliminate” program, to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, which kills more than 50,000 babies each year.

Fundraisers to help buy handicap van

WARREN

On Dec. 11, remember that a Warren child needs a ride.

Gianna Elizabeth Sayers, 4, was born with Dandy-Walker Syndrome, which has left her in a wheelchair. Her aunt is planning fundraisers that will help to buy a handicap van for Gianna’s mom to transport her.

Brittle bones are a part of Dandy-Walker Syndrome, and the child must be moved with care.

The first fundraiser is the collection of aluminum cans and tabs, which the recycling center buys by the pound. Businesses are donating matching funds raised by the aluminum collection.

On Dec. 11, tabs and cans will be collected from 5 to 8 p.m. at the rear of Caesar’s Italian Restaurant, 2801 W. Market St. Donations can be dropped off early.

Bracelets that say “Gigi needs a ride” can be bought at the restaurant for $5 each before and during the aluminum collection.

Project will cheer kids who are hospitalized

BOARDMAN

Brighten Up for the Kids is a holiday program to lift the spirits of children who must spend Christmas in the hospital.

Businesses and their patrons are asked to donate gifts for the children and to accept the Christmas light challenge to make the area around Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley, on Market Street, cheery and bright.

The Santa list includes coloring books, crayons, books, games and activity sets. For a complete list of gifts the children need or for more information call 330-788-9078.
