Goodin plans to run for Mahoning sheriff
POLAND
Poland Police Chief Brian Goodin said he’ll file nominating petitions today to run for Mahoning County sheriff.
He’ll join retired Youngstown Police Chief Jimmy Hughes and Jerry Greene, the sheriff department’s director of jail services, as candidates in the March 6 Democratic primary for sheriff.
Wednesday is the deadline to file for the seat.
Randall Wellington, sheriff since 1999, isn’t seeking re-election next year.
Fire in New Castle

A woman and her two children suffered burns during a fire at their Ray Street home.
The fire call came at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The house was damaged in the fire.
Firefighters declined Sunday to provide additional information, including the cause, extent of the damage and names of those injured.
Three injured in crash
CHAMPION
Three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on state Route 45.
A 2000 Chevrolet Blazer, driven by Edwin Sly, 44, of Mesopotamia went left of center on state Route 45 north, near the mile 14 post, about 6:20 p.m. Saturday, crashing head-on into a van traveling south, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported.
The 2000 Ford wheelchair-transport van was driven by 34-year-old Alanna Bailey of Warren. She was transporting Estella Wilthew, 86, of Champion, who was seated in the back of the van.
All were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the highway patrol.
The crash remains under investigation.
Homeless assistance
COLUMBIANA
Two Columbiana County agencies have received nearly $350,000 in grants through the Ohio Homeless Assistance Grant Program.
According to state Rep. Craig Newbold, R-1st, the State Controlling Board approved the release of $127,400 to the county’s Community Action Agency and $215,700 to its Mental Health Clinic.
The Homeless Assistance Grant Program provides funding to local governments, nonprofit organizations, public-housing authorities and a consortium of eligible applicants for housing assistance and services to prevent people from being homeless.
In total, the Department of Development received 85 applications requesting more than $20.5 million in assistance under HAGP. Those funded will assist about 31,000 individuals throughout Ohio, officials said.
Plunge into new year
SHARON, Pa.
The Fourth Annual Shenango Polar Bear Jump at Quaker Steak and Lube will begin at noon Jan. 1.
After registration, the jump into the Shenango River will take place.The event will include T-shirts for sale, games, music and entertainment.
