Michelle Alexander, author of “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness,” will take part in a discussion at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The presentation is sponsored by Youngstown State University Community Diversity Program Series.

Alexander’s book discusses how it is no longer acceptable to use race explicitly as a basis for discrimination, but it is legal to discriminate against convicted criminals in employment, housing, the right to vote and denial of educational opportunity.

Dogs with Santa

Come Stay and Play Pet Resort, 3150 S. Raccoon Road, will have its fourth annual “Doggie Pictures with Santa” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. next Sunday to benefit Community Helping Animals in Need. Photos are $5 each and come in a card. CHAIN is a nonprofit group helping with a low- or no-cost spay and neuter program for people in financial distress to help reduce the unwanted pet population. Weather program for the homeless

WARREN

The Warren Family Mission’s Cold Weather Program for homeless men and women begins Monday. The program at 1228 W. Market St. helps get the homeless out of the cold weather and provides shelter and hot meals. During the day, participants will be doing job searches. For more information, call 330-394-3251.

Free movie

CORTLAND

Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District kicks off its 2011-12 Trumbull SWCD Movie Night series with a free movie about Yogi Bear.

It will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Trumbull County Agriculture and Family Education Center, 520 W. Main St.

In the movie, the park is in danger of closing due to lack of visitors. It’s a PG-rated family movie that runs 82 minutes.

Trumbull SWCD is trying to raise awareness about the importance of getting children outside for recreation. Information on local parks and wildlife, including Ohio’s bears, will be available at the event. For more information or to register, call 330-637-2056, ext. 111.
