THE HISTORY Harry Burt’s legacy

Harry Burt created the ice-cream-on-a-stick novelty known as the Good Humor bar in the early 20th century.

In 1920, Burt outfitted a fleet of 12 street-vending trucks with freezers and bells and used the vehicles to sell his ice- cream novelties.

Burt bought the building at 325 W. Federal St. in 1921 and opened his confectionary business in 1922.

He received a patent for the Good Humor bar in 1923.

The original Good Humor man, as Burt is known, died in 1926.

Burt’s widow sold the downtown property in 1935 to James Ross, founder of Ross Radio.

The historical society acquired it in 2008.
