Little Pilgrims and Indians lined the first-grade hall of Watson Elementary on Nov. 17 to have their own version of the first Thanksgiving.

Many preparations for the feast were completed in advance.

“Throughout November, we’ve been learning about the history of the first harvest feast and how it is important to our country. The kids have created place mats decorated with Native American symbols and the students are dressed as Pilgrims and Indians for our celebration,” explained first-grade teacher Debbie Sinchak.

Preparation also included the first-grade teachers baking corn bread and buying apple cider and popcorn to serve at the meal.

“Although we wanted to bring turkey, our cafeteria covered that by serving creamed turkey at lunchtime today,” reported teacher Jamie Giliberti.

The students learned a bit of patience by waiting until all their classmates had a meal before digging in.

Teaching assistant Brittany Snyder reminded the students to be thankful during the holiday.

“We are thankful for our friends, family and the food before us. Let’s eat!” she exclaimed, as the first-graders proceeded to do just that.
