The 24th annual Ursuline Distinguished Alumni Awards were presented at the Feast of Saint Ursula Liturgy.
Each year, this award is given to graduates of Ursuline High School who have distinguished themselves by dedicated service to the school and to the community at large. This year’s recipients are Janet E. Del Bene (’57) and Scott R. Schulick (’90).

While at Ursuline, Del Bene was a member of the National Forensic League, the French Club, Auxilium Latinum and the National Honor Society. She was named an Honorable Mention Merit Scholar and received a district level award from the Junior Academy of Science. Del Bene received her bachelor of science degree in 1963 and her bachelor of arts degree in 1965 — both summa cum laude —from Youngstown State University.
In 1968, she was awarded her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. She continued her studies through a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin with Dr. John Harriman from 1968-1969. In 1969, Del Bene was an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow at the Mellon Institute with Dr. John A. Pople, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1998.
From 1970 to 1999, Del Bene was a professor of chemistry at Youngstown State University, and from 1977–1999 she was a research professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine. Del Bene is professor emerita of chemistry at Youngstown State University.
Schulick is the son of Robert and Joanne Schulick and a 1990 graduate of Ursuline High School.
During his years at Ursuline, Schulick was involved in many activities: National Honor Society, student council, the yearbook and literary magazine staffs, top salesman of the annual Ursuline calendar sale (for four years), and he ended his career at UHS by playing the role of Sky Masterson in Ursuline’s production of “Guys and Dolls.”
After his graduation from Ursuline, Schulick attended YSU, receiving his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1994 and his MBA in Finance in 1996. While at YSU, he was president of student council and was appointed as a student trustee by then-Gov. George Voinovich.
After his graduation from YSU, Schulick joined Butler Wick & Co. as a financial adviser. In September 2010, Schulick was named vice-president, senior trust onvestment officer and treasurer for Farmers Trust Co., formerly Butler Wick Trust Co.
In addition to his executive duties at Farmers Trust, Schulick is an adjunct faculty member of Walsh University in North Canton and a part-time faculty member at YSU’s Williamson College of Business Administration.
He is a member of the board of trustees for YSU, the board of directors of Humility of Mary Health Partners, the board of directors and past chairman of Wick Neighbors Inc., the board of directors of Youngstown Cityscape, the board of trustees for the Ursuline Center, a past member of the Ursuline Alumni Board of Trustees and a member of the newly established board of directors of Ursuline High School.
Schulick has received numerous awards recognizing his leadership and his work on behalf of local institutions.
