The familiar smells of turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes wafted through the air at Stadium Drive Elementary on Nov. 21, as students throughout the school celebrated Thanksgiving with their classmates.

In Tami Nero’s kindergarten classroom, students learned about the holiday through stories, lessons and art projects.

A mural displaying all the Pilgrims who boarded the Mayflower decorated the wall outside Nero’s room. In social studies lessons, Nero had her students compare Thanksgiving today with that of the first harvest feast.

The kindergartners mastered the story of Thanksgiving with a retelling bracelet, where colored beads represented things like the long trip across the ocean to America, the Native Americans who helped the Pilgrims and the food enjoyed at the first feast.

Melissa Struharik used the holiday as a chance to introduce geography to her first-graders, pointing out the continents of Europe and North America as the Mayflower left from England and landed in America.
