Canfield youth wrestlers battle the best

The Canfield Wrestling Club recently opened its season at the “Clash of the Titans” tournament in Hudson. This tournament featured some of the top youth clubs from Ohio and Pennsylvania, including two national champions, 19 state champions and 79 state placers.

Canfield finished fourth as a team behind defending champion Wadsworth, second-place Quest (Pa.) and third-place Foxfire (Toledo).

Individual placers for Canfield were David Crawford (first), Andy Garr and Angelo Petracci (second), Dominic Cooper (third), Dominic Gelonese, Will Dawson, Nick Crawford and Nathan Whitehead (fifth) and Daniel Kapalko (sixth). Ethan Fletcher, Dominic Yozwiak and Albert Werden were one match from placing. McCoy Watkins, Aiden Burscak and Paris Bumgardner also made strong showings.

The championship match between David Crawford and Kyle Kestle (Cincinnati) camr down to the end. The match was tied 2-2 late in the third and final period with Crawford in the top position. Kestle escaped with 20 seconds remaining to take a 3-2 lead.

Crawford attempted a takedown shot and failed. With 10 seconds left and trailing 3-2, he shot a single leg and powered through Kestle’s sprawl. With four seconds left, Crawford spun behind to earn a two-point reversal and secure a 4-3 victory.
