Canfield students participate in Boys State

Seniors Jared Hofsess and Aly Saleh were selected to represent Canfield High School at Buckeye Boys State last summer at Bowling Green State University.
According to Sons of American Legion No. 301 of Austintown, who sponsored the boys, the qualities of leadership, scholarship, citizenship and willingness to be involved or participate, are characteristics which they seek.
Hofsess was involved in the criminal justice system while at Boys State. He participated in many
aspects of law enforcement. He most enjoyed listening to and meeting Gov. John Kasich.
He is a senior at Canfield and both varsity soccer and varsity tennis and was involved with the Helping Hands Program. He spent many years playing club soccer and is very active in the Junior Tennis League Program with Boardman Tennis Center.
He is an honor student with a 3.5 GPA. He plans to study Economics/Political Science and wants to attend law school.
Saleh said he enjoyed his nine days at Boys State and met many new friends with whom he is still in touch. He feels he learned more about the government and holding a job.
He was Law Director for his city as well as treasurer for his political party. 2011 was the 75th anniversary of Buckeye Boys State and created a special atmosphere during their stay.
Saleh is a senior class officer, as well as an officer for Speech and Debate, Band and National Honor Society. He is a two-time state qualifier in Public Forum Debate, finishing in the top 16 in 2011.
He has been involved with CISV since he was 11 and traveled to Italy as a representative of the USA with the organization. He plans to study pre-medicine and has a 3.9 GPA.
