NFL ROUNDUP

News and notes

Jets 17, Giants 3: Mark Sanchez threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes and the Jets capitalized on two big special teams plays to defeat the Giants in a preseason game delayed two days by Tropical Storm Irene. Bilal Powell had a 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter and the Jets defense intercepted Eli Manning twice in what probably will be the last major warmup for both teams’ starters before the regular season. The chippy game featured the Giants’ Brandon Jacobs and the Jets’ Muhammad Wilkerson being ejected for a fight.

49ers: Wide receiver Michael Crabtree caught a couple dozen passes during warmups while still on the physically unable to perform list. Team spokesman Bob Lange says the club immediately reported the “oversight” to the league after it happened Monday afternoon. Crabtree, the 10th overall draft pick in 2009, has missed his third straight preseason while nursing a left foot injury.

Eagles: Michael Vick agreed to a six-year deal on Monday night. The deal is worth $100 million, including about $40 million guaranteed, according to sources.

Bills: Quarterback Brad Smith was held out of practice for precautionary reasons due to injury. Coach Chan Gailey says Smith twisted his foot in Saturday’s 35-32 overtime with over Jacksonville. Smith had four carries for 19 yards and an incompletion in the game. Also former YSU standout Donald Jones returned to practice after suffering a head injury.

Bengals: Running back Cedric Benson was sentenced to 20 days in jail after reaching a deal to settle two misdemeanor assault cases in Texas. Benson was in court in Austin, Texas, on Monday and the deal was struck after a jury was picked. He said he will surrender to authorities on Oct. 17, which is the Monday of Cincinnati’s bye week.

Patriots: Six-year safety James Sanders, who was tied for second on the team with three interceptions last season, was released. He was due to make a base salary of $2.8 million in 2011. “Tough release,” coach Bill Belichick said in a conference call. “James has been a good guy to have on this team. A hardworking kid.”
