Sarah McLachlan to sing at 9/11 memorial in Pa.

SHANKSVILLE, Pa.

Singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan will perform at a dedication ceremony for the 9/11 memorial for Flight 93 in western Pennsylvania.

The National Park Foundation announced Monday the pop vocalist will sing at the Sept. 10 event near Shanksville, where the 40 passengers and crew aboard United Flight 93 died Sept. 11, 2001.

The plane crashed in a field after it’s believed the passengers tried to overtake the hijackers.

The Flight 93 National Memorial dedication will include dignitaries and the relatives of those killed in the attack.

A “Tower of Voices” memorial is designed to house 40 wind chimes. Organizers have raised most of the estimated $60 million needed for it.

McLachlan has won Grammy Awards for her songs “Building a Mystery” and “I Will Remember You.”

‘The Avengers’ will wrap filming in Cleveland

CLEVELAND

The superheroes are getting ready to leave Cleveland.

The Marvel Studios movie “The Avengers” is expected to finish filming in Cleveland in the next few days. The city has impressed filmmakers who made parts of it look like war zones and a German beer garden and opera house.

Co-producer Jeremy Latcham tells The Plain Dealer it’s been great to see crowds line up to watch the action and snap photos. He says Cleveland gave the scenes the “street feeling” the crews sought.

They filmed a battle between Captain America and a Norse villain in Public Square, but they’ve been tight-lipped about the plot. The film features Marvel comics characters, including Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow.

She says the same course also will take him to the Air Force Auxiliary Air Field in Gila Bend, Ariz.

The training in the U.S. consists of environmental training, live firing and tactical exercises. The British Defense Ministry says the prince will join an Apache squadron.

GARY, Ind.

Michael Jackson’s children and father visited the late pop star’s boyhood home in Gary, Ind., as the town celebrated what would have been his 53rd birthday.

Hundreds of fans took part in activities outside the house in Jackson Street over the weekend ahead of Jackson’s birthday Monday.

Thirteen-year-old Paris Jackson told WLS-TV that she enjoyed seeing so many fans at the house when she and her brothers, 14-year-old Prince and 9-year-old Blanket, visited Saturday.

The Jackson family moved from Indiana to California in 1969. Jackson died in June 2009.
