Airlifts planned to supply cut-off Vt. towns

NEWFANE, Vt. (AP) — Vermont Emergency Management officials say they’ll use helicopters to airlift food, water and supplies to towns cut off by flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Irene.

Emergency Management spokesman Mark Bosma said today that Vermont National Guard helicopters will head today to about a dozen towns where roads and bridges washed out lifelines.

The state also plans to use special vehicles to get supplies into other towns where roads may be passable for National Guard vehicles.

The supplies arrived at National Guard headquarters in Colchester early today in a convoy of 30 trucks from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
