DOVER, Ohio
An eastern Ohio family who thought their two pet cats had died when their house burned down discovered more than two weeks later that one — named Sinders — had survived.
Aaron Fender and wife Laura had gone back to the home to look through the rubble when they heard meowing, Fender told The Times-Reporter of Dover and New Philadelphia .
“My wife said, ‘Do you hear that?’” Fender said.
Fender began digging until a frightened Sinders popped his head out. The couple coaxed the pet out with some cat food, and Fender says the cat was hungry but not dehydrated.
“We were ecstatic,” Fender said.
Fender said meowing also is how the family found Sinders as a kitten eight years ago. They heard meows coming from under their mobile home in Baltic, and Sinders was found in insulation with his mother and the rest of her litter.
The couple and their two daughters, age 8 and 9, were temporarily relocated and plan to rebuild at the site. State authorities say the July 27 fire started in the garage area, and damage was estimated at more than $150,000.
