Earthquake home coverage available
COLUMBUS
In the wake of last week’s 5.8-magnitude earthquake in Virginia, the Ohio Insurance Institute has reminded residents that earthquake insurance is available, despite being in a relatively calm geographic area.
The cost of earthquake insurance is calculated on a “per $1,000 basis,” which means that the average coverage in Ohio costs approximately $125 annually.
An earthquake endorsement usually carries a 5-percentage to 10-percentage point deductible rather than a standard homeowners deductible and normally is offered as add-on coverage to an existing insurance policy.
