This year marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the United States.

Houses of worship planning special services are asked to submit information by 5 p.m. Wednesday. Information will be published Sept. 3.

Voice of Hope

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Youngstown, will host its 14th annual Voice of Hope Dinner on Sept. 16 at the Maronite Center, 1555 S. Meridian Road.

Hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, an auction and entertainment will begin at 5:30 p.m. A gourmet buffet dinner prepared by Mr. Anthony’s will be served at 6:30.

Local news anchor Stan Boney will serve as master of ceremonies.

The following will be honored with Voice of Hope Awards for their work in charity and justice on behalf of disadvantaged people in the diocese: Salvatore and Mary Louise Mormando; Holy Spirit Parish in Uniontown; Humility of Mary Health Partners’ Prescription Assistance Program; and Monsignor Lewis Gaetano.

All proceeds from the event help to provide emergency assistance – food, shelter, clothing, utility assistance and essential medication – to families served by Catholic Charities’ agencies throughout the six-county Diocese of Youngstown.

Elvis Gospel Sunday

“Elvis Gospel Sunday” will be observed at 10 a.m. Sunday at Central Christian Church, 2051 E. Market St. with Mark Lee Pringle as 1950s’ Elvis along with his band.

Good Shepherd Community Church, 4600 Eagle Creek Road, will hold an outdoor worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday.

A picnic will follow at 12:30 p.m.; all are welcome.

Vigil planned

In response to the ongoing famine in East Africa, Terry Vicars of Midwest Spirituality Center is coordinating a vigil/fast from 6 a.m. Monday through sundown Wednesday in front of Lambros Federal Courthouse.

The vigil aims to bring attention to the plight of people in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya, who are starving.

The vigil also coincides with the last days of Ramadan and the fast.

Guest speaker

Bob Mortimer will be guest speaker at the 9:30 a.m. service Sunday at North Lima Mennonite Church, 90 Mennonite Drive.

He also will address Sunday school at 11:15.

Mortimer, who attended the church growing up, now lives in the state of Washington and is the founder of Bob Mortimer Motivational Ministries. At 21, Mortimer walked into a downed power line after a car accident. The electrocution resulted in the amputation of three of his limbs. Mortimer, his wife and family, bicycle on Hope and Courage Journeys to spread a message on that theme and how God gives hope.

Five area Seventh Day Adventist churches will be guests of Temple Emmanuel Seventh Day Adventist Church at a picnic planned Sunday at Nick Johnson Park, formerly Bailey Park, 2201 Knapp Road, off of Jacobs Road. Activities will begin at 9 a.m.

The Sabbath School Department is sponsoring the event; Kathryn Hawks Haney is superintendent and Toni Agee, assistant.

Elder Russell Fields is pastor.

Children’s choir

Abundant Life Fellowship, 46469 state Route 46, will once again host the Children of the World choir at 7 p.m. Sept. 4.

Coffee and Contemplation

VILLA MARIA, Pa.

Villa Maria Spirituality and Education Center will resume its monthly ongoing series of morning seminars, Coffee and Contemplation.

Sister Ardath Blake will present “Paul Encourages the Philippians and Us” during the program from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 13.

Program participants may stay for lunch, but advance registration is required. Cost for the program is $7 and program and lunch, $12.

GriefShare group

NEW WATERFORD

Abundant Life Fellowship, 46469 State Route 46, will resume its weekly GriefShare support group starting at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 7 in the church social room.

The ministry features video interviews with Christian experts on grief and recovery topics as seen from a Biblical perspective, and personal testimonies from people who have experienced long- or short-term bereavement.

Leaders will be Betty Welker of Columbiana and Rick Brown of Lisbon, both church members, who experienced the deaths of children.
