LTI students win honors at nationals

Eight students from Laurel Technical Institute earned honors at the National Health Occupations Students of America annual conference recently in Anaheim, Calif.

Daniel Poppenhouse of Greenville won first-place honors in pharmacology knowledge and first place in health- issues examination.

Jessica Lockwood of Andover, Ohio, won fifth-place honors in medical math.

Victoria Beighley of Mercer, Audrey Lawrence of Greenville, Tim McConnell of West Middlesex and Tina Lohr of Greenville took ninth place as a team in creative problem solving.

Amber Calvert of New Wilmington and April White of Greenville were finalists in medical terminology and medical assisting.

LTI students earned their way to the national competition — where they faced more than 5,000 college and university students from the United States and Puerto Rico — after earning several awards at the state competition in Lancaster last March.

LTI students also served in leadership roles at the national conference based on their performance in the state competition.

Poppenhouse served on the Courtesy Corps, working the medical spelling event, and was a voting delegate representing Pennsylvania students at the national business meeting.

Calvert served on the Nominating Committee to interview nominees for the 2011 election, and White was also a voting delegate.

HOSA has more than 120,000 members. Its goal is to enhance the education, leadership skills and communication skills of students in the health profession.
