YOUNGSTOWN
The buzzer sounded and balls started flying as area corporations and organizations joined Friday evening for the kickoff of the 22nd annual Youngstown Area Community Cup at the Central YMCA.
During this weekend and Sept. 10, spectators can watch about 20 teams, in three divisions, battle it out in 15 sporting events.
Rochelle Wysinger of Youngstown was one of 80 people who tried to shoot as many baskets as they could in 60 seconds from various spots on the basketball court.
The hot-shot basketball challenge was the second event of the competition.
The first took place Aug. 5 when competitors created team banners.
“It’s just a lot of fun,” said Jennifer Quinlan, director of the Youngstown Area Community Cup, which is organized by the YMCA. “My favorite event is the tug-of-war.”
Quinlan said she likes it because teams work together.
The three goals of the Community Cup are to promote camaraderie, pride and teamwork in an organization, to strengthen community pride and to develop awareness of health and fitness, said Quinlan.
Throughout the competition, teams are awarded points based on the position they finish in the various contests. Points are also awarded for teams that bring volunteers.
“A lot of community cups have been won by volunteer points,” said Quinlan.
Chase Rosile of team Humility of Mary said he joined the competition because he wanted to get more involved. This year is his first year competing but he can’t wait for Sunday’s event.
“It took me three Saturday’s of work to get Sunday off for volleyball,” said Rosile. “I am pumped!”
The volleyball challenge is a double elimination and will be begin at 9 a.m. in the YMCA upper gyms.
“It’s a great way to meet people from work and the community,” said Adrian Anderson, Rosile’s team mate.
