Woman indicted in collection-jar theft
YOUNGSTOWN
A Mahoning County grand jury has handed up an indictment against one woman accused of snatching a collection jar from an Army veteran, but chose not to indict a second woman accused in the same crime.
Ayasha Cummings, 25, of Vaughn Street, has been indicted this week on one count of robbery and one count of aggravated robbery. She remains in the Mahoning County jail on a $100,000 bond.
Jasmine Jenkins, 28, of Youngstown, had been charged with robbery and aggravated robbery in the same alleged crime, but a grand jury this week decided not to indict Jenkins. She also had been jailed on a $100,000 bond.
The women were arrested July 30 after Cummings was accused of taking a collection jar containing $531 from a table outside the Walmart SuperCenter in Austintown.
Army veteran Angelo Pappalardo, 78, who has collected donations for Veterans Outreach for the past four years, said he was at the table outside the store when Cummings came by and wiggled the jug.
He said he asked her to leave, but several hours later she came back — this time ripping the jug, which was bolted down, from the table and running with it.
Police said the woman ran to a nearby car and tried to escape with the money jar, but shoppers intervened blocking the escape.
Jenkins, police said, got out of the car and ran but was apprehended by police a short distance away behind a grocery store. Cummings was held by witnesses until police arrived.
The following people also were indicted this week by a Mahoning County grand jury:
Marquell McLane, 25, Kenneth Street, carrying concealed weapons.
