Scrappers’ bats silenced by Doubledays

The Auburn Doubledays defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 4-1, in the finale of their New York-Penn League baseball series on Thursday night.

Nathan Karns and two relievers combined on a five-hitter for the Doubledays. Karns allowed three hits and the Scrappers’ only run in six innings.

Manuel Rivera earned his second save with a perfect ninth inning.

The Scrappers scored their only run in the first inning when Tony Wolters was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to second on an error.

After a strikeout, Wolters moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Jordan Smith’s single to left field.

Auburn took the lead with two rns in the fifth inning.

LINDOR TO MAKE DEBUT

Shortstop Francisco Lindor will make his professional debut on Sunday, when the Scrappers play host to Jamestown at 5:05 p.m. at Eastwood Field.

The Indians reached a deal with the 17-year-old Lindor prior to the signing deadline and assigned him to Mahoning Valley. He has been participating in team workouts since joining the Scrappers on Aug. 17.

Lindor, a switch-hitter, was selected with the eighth overall pick in the draft out of Montverde Academy (Fla.). This season he batted .528 with six home runs and stole 20 bases. He originally committed to Florida State before signing with Cleveland.
