La. man indicted for murder in son’s beheading

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — An attorney for a Louisiana man who allegedly confessed to beheading his disabled 7-year-old son claims his client lacks the mental capacity for the case against him to proceed.

A Lafourche Parish grand jury today indicted 30-year-old Jeremiah Wright of Thibodaux on a first-degree murder charge in the death of his son, Jori Lirette, last week.

In a court filing later today, defense attorney Kerry Cuccia asked a judge to order a mental examination of Wright to determine if he can assist in his defense and understand the proceedings against him.

Cuccia said his request doesn’t involve a determination of whether Wright was sane at the time of his son’s death.

Wright is jailed on $5 million bond. He is set to be arraigned Monday.
