The township can proceed with installing its fifth weather-alert siren now that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved a township grant application.

Trustee Fred Hanley said the siren will be put up next week in Harding Park, an area on the southeastern border with the city that previously was not served by a weather siren.

“They used to send police with their car sirens as a warning,” Hanley said of the area surrounding the park.

The township applied for the grant through Trumbull County after the Department of Homeland Security announced a surplus of funds for sirens. It was a match grant, requiring the township to come up with half of the $21,000 for the siren.

Combined with Hubbard city, the city and township will have 11 sirens covering the area. All will be linked to the same 911 dispatcher in Hubbard city, allowing the dispatcher to signal all of them.
