Man accused of holding toddler son at knifepoint
BOARDMAN
A Boardman man is in custody after reportedly holding his toddler son at knife point.
Police received a call about 7 p.m. Tuesday that a man had barricaded himself in the back bedroom of an apartment building on the corner of Shields Road and Aravesta Avenue while holding a knife to his 14-month-old son, according to Vindicator news partner 21 WFMJ-TV.
The caller told police it happened after the man got into an argument with his wife.
A hostage negotiator with the police department’s Narcotics Enforcement Unit talked with the man before police went into the apartment.
“We were able to get video surveillance from inside the apartment and confirm the child was not near the suspect at the time, and there was a safe point where we could make entry into the room and take the suspect into custody without any harm to the child, which is what we did,” an officer told WFMJ.
No one was injured.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
Charges are pending.
