The city has been awarded $500,000 in Community Housing Improvement Program money, and it will award that money to residents who want to fix up their homes.

The Ohio Department of Development notified the city of the award in a letter dated Aug. 18.

The next step, said Mayor Bill VanSuch, will be to set a public hearing where residents can learn about the program and whether they qualify.

Applications will be available at the hearing and thereafter in VanSuch’s office at the city building on Tenney Avenue, he said. Applications have to be completed by Dec. 31.

The meeting will be next month, he added.

The $500,000 breaks down, approximately, as follows: $22,500 for an emergency monthly housing payment, or enough for approximately two applicants; $100,000 for home repairs, or enough for approximately 13 homes; $248,000 for rehabilitation, or approximately six applicants; and $69,500 for home down-payments, or approximately two applicants.

Annual-income qualifications are as follows: a one-person household, $30,750; two-person, $35,150; three-person, $39,550; four-person, $43,900; five-person, $47,450; six-person, $50,950; seven-person, $54,450; and eight-person, $57,950.
