Youngstown police probe weekend violence
YOUNGSTOWN
City police are investigating several acts of weekend violence including one incident that left a U.S. postal carrier shaken after being beaten and robbed.
The 63-year-old postal carrier reportedly was delivering mail in the 700 block of Kendis Circle on Saturday when a man wearing a bandanna over his face put the carrier in a headlock. Another man, also wearing a bandanna, punched the man in the face three times, knocking off his glasses.
The carrier told police the two unidentified thieves took his cellphone and a wallet containing several credit cards, $8 and a driver’s license.
The carrier did not require medical attention and was able to give a statement to police. He said the assailants appeared to be black teenagers.
Police also are investigating the reported shooting of a 26-year-old South Side woman during a home invasion late Sunday. The woman was listed in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
The woman told police she heard loud banging on her door and called her boyfriend’s cellphone, then hid the phone so he could hear what was happening in the home. She told police two men appeared pointing guns at her. One man held her to a bed while the other ransacked her home demanding money and jewelry.
Reports say the armed thieves were still inside the house when the boyfriend arrived and began ramming his car into a garage in an attempt to scare the men. The thieves ran off, but began shooting into the house as they ran, striking the woman in the hip.
The thieves stole miscellaneous jewelry.
A 50-year-old South Side man also was beaten and robbed on Edwards Street just after 7:30 p.m. Friday. Witnesses said the man was working in the garden of his Edwards Street home when the 16-year-old suspect ran into the yard and attacked the man, taking cash and a checkbook.
Police found the victim severely beaten with lacerations to his face, missing teeth and swollen eyes. Police caught the teen running on Orange Street away from the scene of the attack.
A 20-year-old man was shot in the back while walking on the East Side just after 2 a.m. Friday. The man told police he was walking along Woodcrest Avenue when he heard a gunshot and felt a sharp pain in his back. He said he was able to make it to a home in the 700 block of Bennington Avenue before collapsing.
The man was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center where he was listed in stable condition.
A 39-year-old Dryden Avenue man told police he narrowly escaped armed thieves just after 10 p.m. Friday when two black males wearing red scarves on their faces pointed guns at him and demanded money. The man said he was able to run into his home through an automatic garage door as it was closing.
