An estimated 40,000 to 50,000 people crowded onto the Tam O’Shanter golf course on Aug. 22, 1936, to hear Alf Landon, the Kansas governor who was born in West Middlesex, Pa., give the first major address of his presidential campaign. Landon, a Republican who was challenging President Franklin D. Roosevelt and running against the New Deal, titled his speech, “The American Way of Life.” The next day, Landon escorted his aunt, Mrs. E.J. Linninger of Greenville, Pa., to services at the West Middlesex Methodist Episcopal Church, where his grandfather, the Rev. William Mossman, was once pastor.
