Guard duty: Junior Andrew Radakovich played left guard for the second straight scrimmage as projected starter Lamar Mady recovers from a concussion he suffered early in camp. Radakovich, who started every game at left tackle last season, will move back outside when Mady returns Monday but his brief stint at guard has given the coaches a chance to look at freshman left tackle Eric Franklin. “We had to put the best five out there,” YSU coach Eric Wolford said. Radakovich admitted he didn’t get a vote but said he was fine with the move. “It’s good to know both positions and it’ll help me out when Lamar does come back,” said Radakovich, who played guard briefly as a freshman. “It’s been a weird experience because I’m not used to being inside with all those big guys. I had to change it up a little bit but I’ve adjusted pretty well and it’s going to help me in the long run.”

Bright future: Franklin sat out last year getting his grades in order — he wasn’t even allowed to practice until this summer — and Radakovich has been impressed. “He’s got tremendous talent,” he said. “He’s gonna be really good. He’s really embraced his learning role. He doesn’t talk back and he’ll always come up to me and ask questions or Coach Carm [line coach Carmen Bricillo] or the other guys. He really wants to learn and be in the system. I’m excited to have him here.”

Injured list: Several players missed Saturday’s scrimmage, including starting cornerbacks Donald D’Alesio and Devont’a Davis, defensive linemen Nick DeKraker, D.J. Moss and Josh Fenderson, linebacker Ali Cheaib and tailback Adaris Bellamy. YSU had a 130-play scrimmage on Wednesday and Wolford wanted to give his banged-up players a rest. “My thing is, if it’s an injury where we bang it up again, it could linger all season,” he said. “Why take a chance? Our biggest concern as coaches is injuries. If you lose a couple players it could be catastrophic if they’re key people.”

Officially out: YSU senior DE David Rach was officially declared academically ineligible, ending his career. The South Range High graduate started all 11 games at linebacker last fall.

Up next: YSU is off today then is scheduled for its last two-a-day practice on Monday, with sessions at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The season opener is on Sept. 2 at Michigan State.

Happy birthday: Junior RB Jamaine Cook turned 20 on Friday and senior LB John Sasson turned 23 on Saturday.
