Children who were fighting with swords, a dagger and an ax blade in a yard on Reed Avenue got the weapons after they were dropped from a burglary, police said.
Police were called around 6 p.m. Wednesday by a resident who said he saw the children playing and fighting with the weapons in his backyard, and he was afraid they were going to hurt themselves.
Police recovered four Samurai swords, a dagger and an ax blade from the resident’s yard, a report says. The weapons were very sharp, the report indicates.
Sgt. Dave Taybus said the weapons are part of a collection and were stolen from a Reed Avenue home not far away earlier in the day. He said police are investigating but do not believe at this point that any of the children was involved in the burglary.
Taybus said he is unsure how old the children are, but estimates the oldest at 12. There were five or six children involved, he said.
Police probe fire
Girard
An arsonist doused T-shirts in vegetable oil early Friday morning to start a car fire, police said.
Police said Faron White, of Forsythe Ave, returned home 1 a.m. to find the exterior of his wife’s car on fire. According to the report, he swatted away the flaming rags from the car before the fire department arrived.
When police arrived, they found a bottle of vegetable oil behind a row of bushes in the next-door neighbor’s yard. There were puddles of oil around the bottle, signifying to police that the culprits drenched the rags behind the bushes.
White and his wife, Cassie Boyd, told police a small fire also had been started on their back porch about two weeks ago.
Capt. John Norman said it was the first time the department heard of vegetable oil being used as an accelerant. He said the department has two juvenile suspects.
