COLUMBIANA

The city will welcome the Cajun-Louisiana music of the Canton-area band Zydeco Kings from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday as part of The Firestone Park Gazebo Summer Concert Series. The event is sponsored by Farmers National Bank of Columbiana, which will provide free food and other giveaways.

The last summer concert will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, featuring a drum fest by Universal Percussion. This event will feature free food, other giveaways, special musical guests and other local bands. The park’s gazebo is at 347 E. Park Ave. Concerts will be canceled in the event of rain.

United Way event

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown City and Mahoning County employees will “UNITE for United Way” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at a tailgate event in downtown Youngstown that will serve as the official kickoff for the city and county employees’ portion of the 2011 United Way campaign.

Mahoning County Commissioners Anthony Traficanti, John McNally IV and Carol Rimedio-Righetti will attend the event at the southwest corner of Central Square in front of First National Bank.

Lunch and beverages will be provided for all city and county employees, and prizes to be awarded. For more information, call Kristen Olmi at 330-720-8551.

Accused of arson

YOUNGSTOWN

A 50-year-old city man is accused of lighting his Browning Avenue house on fire while his girlfriend was in it.

Firefighters and police were called to the East Side home about 11:50 p.m. Thursday. Reports state they found a woman in the house who said Dennis Ray was exhibiting signs of mental illness and accused her of wrongdoing before he began trying to ignite the house.

Officers saw the carpet and bathroom walls had burn marks and smoke upstairs, where they found Ray and charged him with aggravated arson and domestic violence, according to reports.

Fire investigation

YOUNGSTOWN

Firefighters are investigating what appears to be a case of arson at 476 Hylda Ave. The fire broke out about 1:15 a.m. Friday, and when crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire in the first-floor hallway, reports state.

Firefighters said it also appears that someone left the house in a hurry, as the television was still on and the house looked ransacked. Damage was estimated to be about $1,000.

Public meeting

Brookfield

A public meeting on Marcellus/Utica Shale opportunities is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 8 at Brookfield Township Fire Department, 774 state Route 7 NE. The meeting will cover information related to drilling, industry jobs, land leasing and legal obligations. The presenters will include an industry geologist, legal counsel, job-training educator and professional agents. The meeting is open to the public.
