Each year, the Epilepsy Foundation of Mahoning County hosts a pie contest during its summer fundraising event.

For the last three years, they have given away ribbons to their winners, thanks to Poland Shepherd of the Valley.

On July 16, the crafty ladies of the Shepherd facility gathered to glue, draw, and bedazzle ribbons for the Epilepsy Foundation.

In previous years, the facility has donated butterflies that the local foundation has used as decorations during the fundraiser. To honor that participation, this year’s prize ribbon was topped with a wire and mesh butterfly. Shepherd residents and crafters Irene Dent, Viola Mackey, Norma Olvanis, Dee Valentini, Louise Joachim and Lois Parsons used the rest of the ribbon as a canvas for their own creativity.

In fact, seeing that creativity was the highlight for Tessa Martin, assistant activity director for the facility.

“Someone could mix up all of the ribbons and I’d still know who made which one. Creating art really shows off our residents’ personalities – some are colorful, others bold, neat and elegant, or very emotional. In our own special way, we’re putting our little stamp on the event by having those creations out there. It’s really an honor,” Martin shared.
