The Canfield library hosted a Mexican fiesta Aug. 9 as the finale to its summer reading programs. Children can still participate in the reading program through the end of the month.
Jane Adams, children’s librarian, read “Riddle of the Drum,” a Mexican-themed book to the children of all ages.
Jan Luoma, librarian, then asked the children and their parents to participate in a story called “Grand Fiesta.” Luoma divided the room into four groups and asked for children volunteers to hold signs up which instructed the attendees to say a Spanish word when the word was mentioned in the story.
For example, group one was to say “ole” when the word fiesta was read and group two was to say “si, si, si” when the word Mexican was read.
“Isn’t it fun to be part of the story?” Luoma asked everyone when she finished reading the story.
The children then returned to the main library and completed a Mexican hidden picture, where they searched for the Mexican flag, a hot pepper and a gecko, to name a few. When they had found all the items, Luoma checked the papers and the children were given sheets of stickers.
And, of course, it wouldn’t be a fiesta without the Mexican Hat Dance. The children gathered around a brightly-colored sombrero and did their best hat dance to the music.
The children then formed a circle around the hat and played the pass the hat game, which is similar to hot potato. When the music stopped, the child holding the hat was out.
To close the fiesta, the children were invited to create yarn art. They used colorful yarn, markers and crayons to create a Mexican masterpiece.
