The usually calm halls of Austintown Baptist Church were transformed into the busy streets of New York City during the church’s Vacation Bible School July 11-15.

With the help of Bible school organizers, the long halls of the church became the intersections of Faith Street and Jesus Boulevard. The church’s sewing and craft group helped create cardboard skyscrapers, complete with pigeons perched on top, and gave each VBS student a cardboard yellow taxi that they used to travel between their classes in missions, music, Bible study, crafts and games.

“We’re exploring New York this year because of our church’s own connection with the city — we travel there for missions often. For our Bible school students, it’s a great way to teach that even in the busiest places, they can proudly step out in their faith,” shared activities director Virginia Mears.

On July 13, midway through their week of Bible school, the students showed that they learned how to hear, believe and connect with God’s word.

Each day, the school focused on a character trait to champion during their missions study, games and craft time. Their July 13 activities focused on trust as a tool to connect with others.

“We wanted to make camp like any day in the big city — a wonderful adventure,” said Mears.
