Two men accused of stealing from unlocked parked cars in the area of Tamarisk Trail, Paulin Drive, Rose- hedge Drive, Sigle Lane and Morningside Drive were arrested Thursday.

Bradley M. Wineburner, 18, of Poland, is charged with receiving stolen property, criminal trespass, carrying a concealed weapon, drug paraphernalia and criminal tools. Michael K. Cornwell, 19, of Boardman, faces charges of receiving stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon, criminal trespass and possessing criminal tools.

Police were called to Sigle Lane about 3:15 a.m. Thursday for a report of a suspicious person and found Wineburner and Cornwell walking on the road with a backpack. When officers searched the backpack, they found items commonly stolen from vehicles, including watches, cellphones and power cords, reports state.

Police said they found folding knives on the men and a suspected marijuana pipe during a search of Wineburner’s car. The two were taken to Mahoning County jail.

Poverty simulation

The East High School administration and building leadership team will host a free, public Community Action Poverty Simulation from noon to 3 p.m. Monday at the high school.

Participants will role-play the lives of low-income families, disabled people or senior citizens and interact with human-service agencies, bill collectors, job interviewers and others.

The simulation enables participants to look at poverty from different perspectives and recognize the potential for change as well as to create a broader awareness of the realities of poverty among policymakers, community leaders and others.

Anyone interested in participating in or observing the simulation should call the school at 330-740-4005 to register.

The Canfield school board accepted the resignation of a high-school science instructor and hired a tutor Wednesday at its monthly meeting. Matt Montgomery will leave the district to take a position as principal of Waterloo Middle School. The board approved his resignation effective Sept. 1. The board also voted to hire Crystal Schneider as a tutor effective for this school year. Schneider will earn $16.98 an hour.
