4 die in apartment fire in Newport News, Va.


NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — Authorities in Virginia say four people have died in an apartment fire in Newport News.

Captain Robert E. Lee with the Newport News Fire Department tells WAVY-TV the fire was reported by a maintenance worker at 2:26 p.m. today. When crews arrived minutes later, they discovered five victims.

Lee said four people were pronounced dead. The bodies appear to be those of an adult, a teenager and at least two children. The condition of the other victim is unknown.

WAVY reported little external damage but heavy smoke damage inside the unit at Forrest Pines Apartment Homes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
