Youngstown skating club takes fifth place

YOUNGSTOWN

The Skating Club of Greater Youngstown took fifth place competing against 84 rink teams from 23 states plus China and the Philippines in this year’s ISI World Recreational Team Championships.

They also received a team championships trophy, which is presented to the second- through fifth-place teams that accumulate the most overall team points during the six days of competition.

By special invitation, the team also was chosen to participate in Friday evening’s Benefit on Ice show, starring Ryan Bradley, the 2011 U.S. National Champion.

This year’s competition took place July 25-30 at the national Sports Center Schwann Super Rink in Blaine, Minn. The host city for 2012 will be Dallas.

Twenty-six skaters from the Greater Youngstown and Western Pennsylvania area participated in this year’s championships, entering various levels of figure skating. They train at the Ice Zone in Boardman, as well as Hess Ice Rink in New Castle. The group comprises a variety of ages, who skate under the guidance of SCGY’s club director and coach Maria Koman and coach and assistant club director Quinn Shaw, both of Poland, and several other instructors on the club’s coaching staff.
