Scrappers rally, get All-Star Game

BURLINGTON, VT.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers celebrated getting the New York-Penn League All-Star Game for the first time by keeping pace with the Auburn Doubledays in the race for the Pinckney Division title.

Wednesday, the Scrappers (33-24) opened the second portion of the season by defeating the Vermont Lake Monsters, 5-1, to remain a game behind the Doubledays (34-23).

After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning, the Scrappers rallied with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take the lead. Cody Elliott and Tony Wolters each had RBI singles.

They blew the game open with a three-run eighth inning with Bryson Myles’ three-run hit.

Drew Rucinski (2-0) relieved starter Danny Jimenez with two outs in the fifth inning to earn the victory. Jimenez allowed three hits and Rucinski two.

Cody Anderson and Grant Sides pitched the final three innings and did not allow a hit.

The 2012 NYPL All-Star Game will be played in mid-August at Eastwood Field. The All-Star Game will feature the best prospects in an American League versus National League game format.
