Pregnant Chicago teen fatally shot, but baby saved

CHICAGO (AP) — Authorities say a gunman killed a pregnant teenager in a southwest Chicago neighborhood, but doctors were able to save her baby.

Chicago Police Officer Ronald Gaines says the teen was walking with friends in Marquette Park late Tuesday when a man ran toward the group and began shooting.

Authorities say 17-year-old Charinez Jefferson suffered multiple wounds to the body and one shot to her head. Fire Department spokesman Will Knight says she was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition.

Jefferson was pronounced dead less than an hour later, but doctors saved her baby boy, who is in critical condition.

Nobody else was hurt in the shooting. No one has been arrested.
