Culpepper in camp with 49ers

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

Daunte Culpepper threw passes to tight end Nate Lawrie once again, on a little bigger stage this time than during their stint together last year with the United Football League’s Sacramento Mountain Lions.

Culpepper worked out for some 30 minutes Monday in front of the San Francisco 49ers brass — and Lawrie called it a crisp, impressive session. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman liked what he saw and heard from the veteran quarterback, but was noncommittal about whether San Francisco would sign him.

“I was catching balls for him during the workout, and he was throwing it around pretty good. He’s spinning it well,” said Lawrie, who signed a one-year deal with San Francisco on Sunday. “Daunte’s got a ton of experience. He’s got a lot of success in this league. And the guy can play, he can throw the ball. That’s what it all boils down to.”

A&M regents OK conference alignment

COLLEGE STATION, Texas

The Texas A&M Board of Regents has given President R. Bowen Loftin the authority to move the Aggies out of the Big 12.

The board took the action Monday, giving Loftin the OK to take any action he deems necessary when it comes to conference alignment. There has been speculation that the Aggies are looking to leave the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference.

The SEC on Sunday reaffirmed its 12-school alignment, but left the door open for expansion.

The vote came soon after the chairman of the Texas House Committee on Higher Education, state Rep. Dan Branch, indefinitely postponed a legislative hearing on the subject.

NCAA investigates Miami gifts

MIAMI

NCAA investigators visited the University of Miami campus Monday looking into claims that more than a dozen former or current football players received gifts and services from convicted Ponzi schemer Nevin Shapiro, his attorney said.

Shapiro has told the NCAA he provided players with the use of a yacht and other favors, said his attorney, Maria Elena Perez. Shapiro and Perez have been talking with the NCAA about the matter for a couple of months and provided documentation, she said.

University officials didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. School officials and current players were expected to be interviewed.

Commission upholds Martin’s loss

LOS ANGELES

The California State Athletic Commission has upheld ring officials’ decision to stop boxer Christy Martin’s June 4 bout with Dakota Stone after Martin suffered a broken right hand.

The panel voted 5-0 Monday in Los Angeles despite claims by Martin’s attorneys that it amounted to sex discrimination because of a misguided notion of a greater need to protect female fighters. Martin, whose next match is in New York at the end of the year, vowed to never box in California again.

Martin said she didn’t expect to win her appeal but had hoped the fight would be ruled no-contest.
