3 charged in carjacking of Pa. mayor

NANTICOKE, Pa. (AP) — Three men have been charged in the carjacking assault of a northeastern Pennsylvania mayor earlier this summer.

Twenty-four-year-old Daniel Banks, 21-year-old Thomas Owens and 20-year-old Steven Brannigan were arrested today on charges including aggravated assault, conspiracy, vehicle theft, robbery, and other counts.

Police allege the three Wilkes-Barre men assaulted Nanticoke Mayor Joseph Dougherty and stole his car as he sat outside his home in June. Authorities say Dougherty dialed 911 but lost consciousness while a friend rendered aid. They say the car was used in a burglary the next day before it was found torched in a wooded area.
