Tropical storm warning canceled for Bermuda

MIAMI (AP) — U.S. forecasters say a tropical storm warning has been lifted for Bermuda, now that Tropical Storm Gert is likely to pass well east of the island chain.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said today that the warning had been discontinued. Forecasters say the storm is expected to pass far to the east of Bermuda later today. The storm had been expected to approach the island, leaving people to haul their boats onto beaches and shutter their homes.

The seventh tropical storm of the Atlantic season had maximum sustained winds of about 60 mph (97 kph) and was moving north at 12 mph (19 kph). It was centered about 95 miles (153 kilometers) east-southeast of Bermuda.
