Series on diversity begins next Monday

The Youngstown State University Diversity Council’s 2011-12 Community Diversity Program Series kicks off next Monday and continues through next spring with lectures, presentations and performances on a variety of topics.

The series, sponsored by YSU’s Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, presents programs and activities that promote awareness of cultural, social, economic, racial, gender and other forms of diversity in society.

This year’s series features:

Aug. 22, 7 p.m., “Sex and the Media: Sex Roles Stereotypes, Gender Identity and Inclusiveness,” First Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown, 1105 Elm St., Youngstown.

Aug. 26, 4 to 11 p.m., Pride Festival, B&O Station, 530 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown. For more information, visit www.mvpridecenter.com.

Sept. 15, 12:15 p.m., Hispanic Heritage, “Latinos: United Through Our Diversity,” in the rotunda of the Mahoning County Courthouse in downtown Youngstown.

Sept. 26, noon, “Of Judaism and Israel: The Jewish Question in Contemporary Moroccan Politics,” Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center at YSU. Lecture by Aomar Boum of the University of Arizona.

Oct. 2, 3 p.m., “Sojourn to the Past” first annual nonviolence parade, starting on Lincoln Avenue and proceeding to downtown Youngstown.

Oct. 3, 5 p.m., Civil Rights activist and director speaks out on nonviolence, First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave.

Oct. 15, noon to 3 p.m., Hispanic Heritage Celebration closing ceremony, McDonough Museum of Art at YSU.
