The 58th annual Lawrence County Fair will kick off today and extend through Saturday.

Each day has different events including the draft-horse pull today and compact- car figure-eight race Wednesday.

The fair begins each day at 10 a.m. and closes at 11 p.m.

Fire in Howland

A two-story apartment complex went up in flames Sunday afternoon, causing $25,000 worth of damage and destroying two apartments.

The fire, at 2412 Elm Rd., reportedly began at 3:23 p.m. On arrival, firefighters found two apartments fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters had the blaze under control by 3:40 p.m.

The Warren, Bazetta and Youngstown Air Reserve Station fire departments assisted Howland in controlling the blaze.

No injuries were reported, but the fire killed one cat. The cause, according to officials, is accidental.

Four vacant-house fires blazed through the city Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Fires reportedly began at 705 Salt Springs Road at 10:25 p.m. Saturday and 523 Steel St. at 10:32 p.m. At 11:05 p.m., a third blaze began at 2552 Cornwall St. The fourth began at 3:47 a.m. Sunday at 1236 East High Ave.

Both the Cornwall and Steel Street fires rekindled at 4:35 a.m. and 5:07 a.m. respectively, authorities said.

No injuries were reported, and officials did not say whether the causes were known.

Sewer meeting

Hughes Avenue property owners will have a preliminary meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on options for city sewer installation.

The meeting will be in the Hubbard City Building, 220 W. Liberty St. Water foreman Pat Camuso will be available to answer residents’ questions.

Pedestrian struck

A female pedestrian was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown after a car struck her Sunday.

The accident occurred about 10 p.m. on South Avenue, just north of 224 in front of Sam’s Club, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. The hospital has not released information on her condition.
