HandsOn Volunteer Network of the Valley, a United Way Agency, is the local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement, and management for people of all ages and abilities in the Mahoning Valley located at Youngstown State University, second floor of the Williamson School of Business and its main office, 5500 Market St., Suite 106, Boardman. Hands On is a monthly column that serves to communicate the impact that volunteering can have on our community. OPPORTUNITIES

Girard Multigenerational Center 10-Year Anniversary: Assist the staff of the GMGC with their 10-year anniversary celebration. Volunteers will assist with decorating the center, setup and greeting guests.

S.O.P.H.I.A.: Volunteers are needed to enhance the productivity of the organization and advance the mission. Volunteers may be asked to file, answer phone and copy material.

RSVP Reading Buddy: RSVP is orienting new volunteers to the Reading Buddies program in the Youngstown City Schools for the 2011-12 school year. Volunteers need to possess patience and understanding as well as commit to regular schedule of working with elementary-school children.

Junior Achievement: Volunteers are needed to work in partnership with a classroom teacher and present six 45-minute JA lessons to middle-school students in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. JA provides lesson plans, program materials and training for all volunteers.

United Way Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley: United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley is accepting donations of school supplies to stuff a bus. Donations will be distributed locally and can be dropped off at the United Way office, 255 Watt St., Youngstown.

Beatitude House: Volunteers needed to tutor or instruct adults in basic math, language arts, writing, social studies or current events. Contact Beatitude at 330-792-3644.

Youngstown Peace Race: Volunteers are needed to assist the Youngstown Peace Race committee throughout the race on Oct. 23. Contact Al George at 330-540-3708 or algeorgecrec@aol.com or www.youngstownymca.org.

Senior Independence Hospice: Volunteers needed to serve as a substitute family/caregiver in the home performing activities that the volunteer has been prepared for and has agreed to perform. The volunteer has the option of performing homemaker chores, running errands, and/or providing companionship and respite care. Making Kids Count: Seeks a volunteer coordinator with good interpersonal skills and leadership abilities to recruit, promote, and maintain a group of volunteers and assist during Volunteer Days one to two times per month. Time commitment is four to six hours per month. Making Kids Count focuses on the individual needs of children and their families. It partners with various nonprofit organizations to serve, support and enrich the lives of those in need.

Youth Volunteer Corps: There are still projects to be done and new volunteer opportunities. Students 13 through 18 can participate in one or up to eight meaningful and rewarding service opportunities in the Mahoning Valley. Projects scheduled for this year: Neighborhood Ministries, Aug. 22-24; Grow Youngstown, date TBA; and the Canfield Fair, Aug. 31-Sept. 5.

Someplace Safe Office Help: Assist with various office duties, such as sorting donations, preparing copies, stuffing newsletters, fundraising and small handyman jobs.

American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley: Needs disaster relief volunteers. Learn what it takes to assist fire and flood victims in Trumbull and Mahoning counties with the Red Cross. Training is free. Aquatic instructors also needed to assist the Red Cross with its aquatic programs that include swimming and lifeguard instruction. A volunteer receptionist is needed to answer and direct incoming phone calls at Warren Red Cross office. Days and times are flexible.
