Doctor retires from Medical Corps

Dr. Gerald A. Matteucci, staff anesthesiologist with St. Elizabeth Health Center, has retired from the Army Reserve Medical Corps after more than 22 years of military service.

Dr. Matteucci, 60, a native of Brownsville, Pa., graduated from Fairmont State College, Fairmont, W. Va., in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and received his medical degree from the Universita’ di Bologna, Italy, in 1984.

A partner in Bel-Park Anesthesia Associates Inc., with offices in Canfield, Dr. Matteucci first came to Youngstown in 1986 as an internal medicine resident at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Before that, he did a residency in surgery at McKeesport Hospital, McKeesport, Pa., and in 1987, Dr. Matteucci began a three-year residency at Huron Hospital in Cleveland, specializing in obstetrical and cardiovascular anesthesia and pain management.

Before coming back to St. Elizabeth in 2003, he worked 11 years at Salem Community Hospital.

Dr. Matteucci also is a practicing aviation medical examiner authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration to provide physical examinations for pilots. He is a diplomat with the American Academy of Pain Management and a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Mahoning County Medical Society, the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists and the Ohio State Medical Association.

Dr. Matteucci received a direct commission to captain in the Army Reserve Medical Corps in 1988 and was promoted to colonel in 2006.

His military awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.

Most recently, Dr. Matteucci was attached to the Army Medical Department Professional Management Command at Fort McPherson, Ga., and to the 1207th Army Hospital at Fort Benning, Ga.

His most recent active duty was June through September 2009, as staff anesthesiologist at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany, during Operation Enduring Freedom.

For four months in 2005, he was staff anesthesiologist at Tripler Army Medical Center, Schofield Barracks, Honolulu, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and in 2003 was staff anesthesiologist at Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, N.C., in support of Operation Enduring Freedom – Noble Eagle.

Dr. Matteucci, his wife, the former Linda Benchwick of Youngstown, and their son, Charlie, live in Berlin Center.
