Shrine dedication

St. Brendan Church, 2800 Oakwood Ave., will dedicate a new Marian shrine Sunday to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas. The dedication will follow the 10 a.m. Mass.

As is the custom in Hispanic homes, a portrait or statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe graces the front entrance at the residence. St. Brendan ministers to a large segment of the Hispanic community in the city.

The date was chosen to coincide with the Feast of the Assumption on Sunday.

The service will be conducted by the Rev. William Loveless, pastor.

Multicultural service

A multicultural worship service is planned at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 21 at Coitsville Presbyterian Church, 91 Coitsville-Hubbard Road, featuring a combined, multicultural choir.

Pastor Bob Offerdahl will offer the prayer of invocation; Pastor Leo Feher, offertory prayer and prayer blessing; Pastor Rafael Cruz, “pastoral” prayers of and for the people; and Pastor Linda Mayfield, closing prayer and benediction.

Special music will be provided by the Nobles.

After the service, there will be a corn boil and potluck picnic. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish, salad or dessert.

Roman Missal

There is a new English translation of the Roman Missal, the official manual for the Roman Catholic Mass.

The Rev. Michael Woost will speak on “New Words for Prayer: The New Roman Missal” when the First Friday Club meets Sept. 1 at Antone’s Banquet Centre on Market Street.

Father Woost serves on the faculty of St. Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology in the Diocese of Cleveland.

The luncheon is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $15.

Harp meditations

Kirk Kupensky, music director at the Unity Centre for Spiritual Living, 1226 Naylor Lloyd Road, will perform ”Harp Meditations IV Lughnasadh” at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Because the date is close to the Celtic holiday, Lughnasadh, the performance will feature prayers and poems from a sampling of Irish mystics. The event will be on the lawn at the labyrinth, weather permitting.

Kupensky will play the Celtic harp, a small to medium-sized harp designed for traditional music.

Labyrinth walk

Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will host a labyrinth walk from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday with the theme “Awaken to Hope.”

The labyrinth, a tool for enriching the spiritual journey, has existed for more than 4,000 years and is found in every major religious tradition in the world. Labyrinths are geometric forms that define a sacred space.

Sister Therese Pavilonis will offer a brief history.

Celebrating St. Rocco

St. James’ Episcopal Church, 7640 Glenwood Ave., will celebrate the life and work of Blessed Rocco, minister to the sick, with a festival Eucharist at 10 a.m. Sunday. St. Rocco is the patron saint of the former St. Rocco’s Episcopal Church in Youngstown, which closed in 2007. Several families transferred their memberships to St. James. The event is a way of continuing some of the traditions of St. Rocco’s. The historic St. Rocco statue, which was carried in procession through the streets of Youngstown in another era, is located in a shrine in the front entrance of St. James. The liturgy will be followed by a St. Rocco’s-style homemade cavatelli dinner served from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. prepared by St. Rocco’s cooks. The menu is homemade cavatelli, meatballs, sauce and bread; tossed salad with special dressing; dessert and beverage. Take-out will be available. Cost is $7 for adults, $3 for children age 6 to 11; and free for those 5 and younger.

On All Saints’ Day, Nov. 1, a new stained-glass window designed as a memorial to St. Rocco, will be dedicated.
