Powers to host singing contest

YOUNGSTOWN

DeYor Performing Arts Center will host a singing competition, with the winner receiving a $5,000 prize.

Titled Singing Star, the contest is open to people who are between the ages of 15 and 28 as of June 26, and legal U.S. citizens.

To enter, contestants must register between noon and 8 p.m. Sept. 7 and 8 at Powers Auditorium, 260 W. Federal St., downtown.

Registration fee is $25.

At the time of registration, contestants will be asked to complete a registration form and a release form and may also submit a head-shot photo if they have one.

Singing Star staff will take head shots for those who do not already have them.

Registration and release forms can be downloaded in advance online at youngstownsymphony.com.

All registration will take place Sept. 7 and 8, with no exceptions.

The first round of Singing Star will be at noon Sept. 11 at Powers Auditorium.

Twenty contestants will advance to the semifinal round.

In the first round, contestants will sing one song without music or instrumental accompaniment of any genre that is no longer than one minute.

Also, a “people’s choice” round will be Sept. 17 at Southern Park Mall.

Eight contestants from the semifinal round, plus one from the people’s choice round, will advance to the finals.

The semifinal and final rounds will be in October.
