Official GED testing sponsored by Youngstown Adult Basic and Literacy Education Program, University System of Ohio, will be at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Choffin Career and Technical Center.

All participants must be pre-registered and bring a photo ID. To preregister or to enroll in free classes, call Youngstown ABLE at 330-744-8715.

Austintown benefit

A fundraiser to benefit a 13-year-old township girl will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Billy’s on South Meridian Road.

The carnival and spaghetti dinner will be in support of Kimberlee Kelly, who was diagnosed recently with ovarian germ-cell cancer, and though the cancer was removed, she must have medical screenings every six weeks, according to a news release.

Cost of admission is $5 for children and $10 for adults, and all proceeds will benefit Kelly.

The price for children includes time in a bouncing castle provided by Austintown Bounce, hot dogs, snow cones and cotton candy. The price for adults includes time in the bouncing castle, spaghetti, salad and bread with butter. Children and their families can also enjoy a dunk tank, clowns and a dance party.

Give boots to needy

Raven Rock Workwear at Eastwood Mall, 5555 Youngstown-Warren Road, is hosting an ongoing boot drive.

Those who have new or used boots they no longer need can drop them off at Raven Rock, which will donate the boots to the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley.

“Many of the boots we get traded in are not in bad enough shape to be thrown away,” said Steve Thomas, Raven Rock president, in a release. “We felt it was a waste considering how many people are going without warm winter boots.”

Man runs out of road

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

Police have a man in custody on drunken-driving and other charges after they say he ran out of road while trying to flee in his car.

Shenango Township police say 54-year-old Norman Johnston III sped away when they tried to stop him for traffic violations about 1:15 a.m. Friday.

Police say Johnston, of West Pittsburg, turned onto the U.S. Route 422 bypass and ended up in a lane under construction. That’s when his car went airborne then crashed onto a road bed that has no concrete in it. That flattened the front tires and damaged the car, which stopped after 100 yards or so.

Johnston remained in the Lawrence County Jail on Friday.

Selling gold, coins?

The International Gold, Silver and Diamond Buyers will be at the Best Western Meander Inn, 870 N. Canfield-Niles Road from Tuesday through Saturday.

Spokesman Ron Smith says IGSDB hopes to spend at least $200,000 purchasing old coin collections, vintage bank notes and scrap gold, silver and diamonds. Gold recently has traded at record high levels and was being sold for as much as $1,740 per troy ounce Friday.

Show hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Girard assault case

Girard

A suspect in a reported assault of a Girard woman pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of complicity to assault.Derek Gainey, 22, of Colonial Drive, Liberty, had turned himself in to authorities Thursday.

According to police reports, Gainey’s girlfriend kicked him out of the house they lived in on Randolph Street after he and his cousin crashed her car, Tuesday. Later, Gainey returned to the home with one male and two females, police said. One female pressed the victim against the wall and beat her in the face. Police said the male and other female that entered with Gainey are wanted for complicity to assault. The female that reportedly beat the victim is wanted for assault.
