Applewood swimmers cap season with awards banquet

The Applewood Swim and Tennis Club recently honored its swim and tennis squads during the annual banquet July 31 at the club.
Steve Brooks was given an award for setting a new team record in the 15-16 division in the backstroke. Bo Velasquez, Allie Janak, Julia Bruno and Frank Luongo were recognized as the most improved athletes.
Alannah Hetzel, Natalie Kovacs, Ivan Bosnjak and Noah Basista earned Spirit Awards, while David Zaitzew was honored as the Torch Bearer. Hammer Down awards went to Tyler Calpin and Sabrina Kurelko.
This summer season was the last one for swimmers Mary Smrek, Steven Brooks, Steven Moss, Mike Henson, Mike Reardon and Ali Azeem. They were honored for their contributions to the program.
The day before the banquet, the team competed in the Youngstown Swim League championship meet at the Poland Swim Club. The 15 and over boys freestyle relay team of Mike Reardon, Mike Henson, Steven Brooks and Steven Moss broke the Poland pool record.
The Applewood swim team finished the season with a 4-3 record.
The squad was coached by Carlo Cordon and assistants Kelley Manning and Mark Brooks.
