New-car sales in the Mahoning Valley jumped 5 percent in July, led by the Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cruze, according to statistics released today by Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio.

Cruze sales reached 178 and topped new-car sales, down from 200 that dealers sold in June. It topped another Chevrolet model — the Malibu — which totaled 118 sales.

It’s the second-consecutive month the Cruze has topped the new-car sales category.

The Malibu still leads the Cruze in year-to-date sales, 1,377 to 1,312.

Sweeney Chevrolet, 8010 Market St., Youngstown, won the new-sales crown in July, selling 127. It topped Greenwood Chevrolet, 4695 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, which sold 121.

New-car sales now have jumped 35 percent during the first seven months of the year compared to 2010.

Greenwood took the overall sales crown, including used-car sales. It sold 110, topping Stadium GM Superstore, 214 W. State Street in Salem, which sold 98.

The best-selling used car in July was the Chevrolet Impala. Dealers sold 100 Impalas, 79 Ford F-150s and 71 Chevrolet Silverado 1500s.
