Man arraigned

BOARDMAN

A 40-year-old Youngstown man was arraigned in Mahoning County Area Court in Boardman on Thursday, accused of felony drug possession and burglary.

Police said Robert R. Carfolo Jr. took about $400 from a 79-year-old woman Saturday. Police said the woman was followed by a man from Giant Eagle on U.S. Route 224 to her home on Parkland Avenue. Reports state the man claimed he had run out of gas and needed to make a phone call, and the woman said she would call for him.

The man took some of the woman’s groceries and walked into her house through the garage without permission and then demanded money from the woman, police said.

Officers said the woman did not see a weapon throughout the ordeal, and the man told the woman several times that he would not harm her and thanked the woman when he left.

Carfolo already is facing theft and drug charges in other jurisdictions, according to court records.

YOUNGSTOWN

In partnership with the City of Youngstown Litter Control and Recycling and Mahoning Avenue businesses, the West Side Citizens Coalition has organized a cleanup event Saturday with its member neighborhood groups and residents.

In addition to cleaning up trash and overgrown weeds, participating neighborhood groups hope the event serves as a catalyst for increased citizen involvement in the West Side community.

The event will kick off from the parking lot of Mahoning Valley Lanes, 2617 Mahoning Ave., at 9 a.m. and conclude with a pizza party at that location sponsored by Strikers at noon. The cleanup will take place from the Mahoning Avenue bridge to Meridian Road. Water, gloves, and trash bags will be provided.
